Before the war on Gaza, Ali Tayeh lived a simple, steady life with his wife Israa and their two children, Hassan and Misk. Ali worked as an accountant at a private company — a stable job that paid the rent on time and kept his family secure. Their rented home was their whole world, full of the children's laughter and the small details the family had built together over the years.
"All I want is for my children to stay under a roof that protects them."
Then the war came, and Ali lost his job. With his income gone, the rent began to pile up month after month. It was not negligence — the war closed the doors of livelihood for thousands of families like his, including those with professional careers. Today the accumulated rent has reached $5,300, a sum the family can no longer cover on its own.
What this home means to them
Hassan and Misk don't understand rent or debt. They only know that this is their home, and that it holds the last bit of safety left around them. Israa carries the fear every day that they could wake up one morning with nowhere to go, in a place where there is nowhere left to go.
